The race to discover life-saving drugs faster is pushing scientists to look beyond conventional computing, with quantum technologies emerging as a potential game changer. But how close are these tools to delivering real-world impact in healthcare, biology and drug discovery?
That question is now driving conversations across the ecosystem, with an industry-academia roundtable bringing together researchers, policymakers, startups and industry leaders to examine practical use cases and near-term opportunities. The focus remained on identifying areas where quantum technologies can move from theory to application, especially in solving complex life sciences challenges.
Hosted at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad in association with NITI Aayog on Wednesday, the discussions were structured around four key areas: drug discovery, scientific modelling and simulation, diagnostics, and quantum sensing applications. A closed-door think tank exercise identified high-impact use cases such as molecular modelling, quantum chemistry, protein structure prediction, genomic data analysis and advanced diagnostics.
A key takeaway was that while quantum computing may take longer to scale for widespread use, quantum sensing is already showing immediate promise, particularly in precision imaging and healthcare applications.
“The convergence of quantum technologies and life sciences presents both immense opportunity and significant complexity. The focus is on identifying realistic, high-value problems where quantum approaches can deliver tangible impact while building a collaborative ecosystem to advance these ideas,” said Prof Deva Priyakumar, Dean of R&D, IIIT Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Prof Indranil Chakrabarty, Head of the Centre for Quantum Science and Technology, highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with policymakers.

Rama Devi Lanka from NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub described the initiative as a step toward translating India’s quantum ambitions into tangible healthcare solutions, while strengthening technological leadership.
Insights from the discussions will be collected into a white paper and roadmap aimed at enabling industry-led research and accelerating innovation in life sciences, marking a step forward in India’s emerging quantum ecosystem at the IIIT-Hyderabad.
