As lifestyle diseases rise and vision-related complications become more complex, early and accurate detection of retinal disorders is no longer optional, it is essential. Conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinal tears, uveitis, and vascular occlusions often develop silently in the peripheral retina, beyond the reach of conventional imaging. Wider retinal views, faster screenings, and precision-led diagnostics are now playing a decisive role in preventing irreversible vision loss and enabling timely intervention for millions of patients.
Addressing this growing clinical need, on Monday, Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals strengthened retinal diagnostics at its Somajiguda Centre of Excellence with the launch of an advanced widefield fundus imaging system, the Widefield Fundus Camera, which offers a significantly broader retinal view compared to normal fundus cameras. The technology enables clinicians to identify early lesions, degenerations, and vascular changes that traditional imaging can miss, supporting more comprehensive and proactive eye care.
The upgrade is particularly relevant as 70% to 75% of patients in the retina department are diabetic and require regular screening for diabetic retinopathy, while 20% to 25% of high myopic patients need detailed peripheral evaluation and frequent monitoring. The system also supports undilated fundus examinations, allowing faster OPD flow for patients with time constraints, while delivering high-quality DESC images for accurate documentation and seamless follow-up care.
Dr. Kasu Prasad Reddy, Founder and Co-Chairman, said the advancement reflects the group’s sustained focus on technology-driven excellence. He noted that Somajiguda Centre has consistently served as a hub for innovation, and the addition of advanced imaging further strengthens precision-led eye care delivery.
Highlighting the clinical impact, Dr. Muralidhar, Senior Vitreo Retinal Surgeon, Somajiguda, said the system captures the peripheral retina with far greater clarity than standard fundus cameras. He added that the ability to image without dilation helps examine patients faster while ensuring thorough screening, especially for diabetic retinopathy, high myopes, and glaucoma patients who need repeated monitoring.

The Somajiguda Centre of Excellence, the organization’s first and longest-standing facility, continues to serve as its core hub for innovation, clinical leadership, and complex case management.
Equipped with advanced LASIK suites, modular operation theatres, paediatric OPDs, OCT, FFA, optical biometry, and high-end surgical platforms, the centre also drivesfellowship programs, community screenings, and multi-specialty training initiatives. With the addition of widefield fundus imaging, Somajiguda further enhances its role in advancing preventive, personalized, and precision-led retinal care in India.
