Money, for many, is tied to validation, hesitation and social perception. It is now also about independence, negotiation and control, as people make clearer choices about work and income. The discomfort around discussing money still exists, but financial self-reliance is becoming more common, with people focusing on stability, steady earnings and personal control over their decisions.
This shift is reflected in how individuals approach work, opportunity and financial discipline.
“One should not hesitate to ask for work, but should be mindful when asking for money,” said actress and television director Neena Gupta, explaining her approach to work and financial discipline, adding that no work is small and staying busy with work leaves no time for depression. She said being willing to work and making practical choices can bring stability, and that it is important to be honest with oneself and make the most of available opportunities.
Reflecting on her journey at FICCI FLO Hyderabad’s “Unscripted: Life, Legacy & Reinvention,” Neena Gupta said success came later in the career, in her 60s, with Badhaai Ho, which changed how she was perceived and brought wider recognition. The phase marked a shift, after which roles became more selective.
She also spoke about being practical with money, saying she prefers safe options and avoids taking risks, which has helped her stay stable through ups and downs.
On financial prudence, Neena Gupta said she is an “FD (Fixed Deposit) person,” adding that she has always taken a cautious approach to money. She said that whether in failure or success, she never had the luxury of dwelling in depression.
“Have a deep desire, and you can achieve anything,” said Neena Gupta, urging the audience to pursue passion.
Meanwhile, Indian fashion designer and actress Masaba Gupta candidly shared her journey, saying her path in fashion was guided by instinct rather than pressure, adding that learning to say “no” to certain decisions is important in business. She said decision-making can feel isolating, but staying consistent matters as both success and failure are part of the process.
Masaba Gupta also said she is not driven by trends, but prefers to follow her own ideas and create them. On a personal note, jewellery shopping is a shared and happy space with her mother, adding that work in jewellery and beauty reflects her creative expression.
“In life, you don’t always get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate,” said Masaba Gupta, offering a practical insight on how outcomes are shaped by negotiation.
Seetha Reddy, Chairperson of FICCI FLO Hyderabad, also noted that the platform was designed to bring forward conversations that reflect women’s evolving journeys, adding that such interactions help inspire confidence and leadership. She said the Women’s Reservation Bill marks a defining moment, adding that it signals a future where more women step into leadership roles, including public office.
