Lung Cancer Surge Hits Maharashtra Most: 85% Cases from Smoking & Costs Rising

Lung cancer cases are rising across India, making awareness and early detection more important than ever. While smoking remains the leading cause, accounting for over 85% of cases, experts point to additional factors such as air pollution, second-hand smoke, workplace chemicals, and inactive lifestyle.

Families are facing not just medical challenges but also heavy financial burdens, with lung cancer insurance claims doubling in FY 2024–25 and average hospitalisation costs rising 27 percent.

The risk is particularly high for people over 50, city dwellers, those exposed to polluted environments, and individuals with a family history of cancer. Persistent coughs, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue, and recurring chest infections are red flags that should never be ignored. Regular screenings, especially low-dose CT scans for high-risk individuals, can help catch the disease early and dramatically improve treatment outcomes.

Individual claims ran into several lakhs, with the highest reaching Rs 58 lakh. Over the past three years, the total payout for lung cancer treatments has more than doubled, highlighting the increasing financial strain on families, according to TATA AIG claims data.

Key pollution and claim hotspots:

  • Maharashtra – 23.9% of claims
  • Gujarat – 17% of claims
  • Delhi – 12.3% of claims

Seeing the alarming numbers, Rudraraju Rajagopal, Senior Executive Vice President & National Head – Consumer Claims, TATA AIG, shared, “Lung cancer is no longer a rare or distant threat, and the financial impact can be just as severe as the medical one. Individual claims can exceed Rs 50 lakh, far beyond standard policy coverage. This is the time to reassess, upgrade, and ensure financial preparedness for critical illnesses that strike without warning.”

Doctors stress that early detection is crucial. High-risk individuals, especially those over 40, smokers or ex-smokers, and residents of high-pollution areas, should watch for:

  • Persistent or worsening cough
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unexplained fatigue or weight loss
  • Frequent or recurring chest infections

Preventive steps include quitting smoking, reducing exposure to polluted environments, maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, and attending regular checkups.

Rising lung cancer cases demand action: Stay aware, screen early, and protect your family financially.
