South India Tops Milk Consumption with Flavoured Varieties Becoming Daily Essentials

Milk is no longer just a morning ritual. Have you noticed how it sneaks into your day in more ways than one? A recent study exploring India’s milk habits shows that South India is leading the way in the nation’s growing dairy love story. From breakfast tables to evening snacks, milk is popping up in new and exciting ways, becoming a part of daily life like never before.

Think tea and coffee for a quick recharge. Naturally, flavoured milk is quickly becoming the new favourite. In South India alone, 48% enjoy it most of the time, and another 50% sip it occasionally. That means badam milk and other fun flavours are no longer reserved for festivals; they are now part of the daily routine. Interestingly, 41% in the region say they drink flavoured milk all year long, not waiting for a season to indulge. Meanwhile, 67% have milk during breakfast and 54% consume it in the evening, making it both a start and end-of-the-day ritual.

Parents across India are also rethinking milk for their children. 54% worry their child’s growth is slower compared to their own childhood, and 64% fear weaker bones due to lower milk intake today. Protein has become a key motivator, with 62% relying on milk for strength and all-day energy.

Even beyond the glass, dairy continues to rule kitchen shelves. Dahi 80%, paneer 76% and butter 74% remain household essentials, proving that milk in all its forms is here to stay.

These insights come from the India Lactograph Findings FY25–26, a national study conducted across 8 key Indian cities to understand how milk fits into daily routines and how consumption is evolving with changing lifestyles. And the most interesting shifts are happening in South India.

Commenting on the study, Shantanu Raj, Marketing Head at Godrej Jersey, said milk is evolving with modern lifestyles. He highlighted that 67% of Indians still enjoy milk mostly through tea, showing its deep cultural roots, while 44% now consume milk through protein shakes, driven by growing fitness habits. He added that the goal is to ensure people never have to choose between taste, convenience and nutrition.

Milk is not stepping back from our plates or cups. It is evolving to meet new health priorities, providing protein, calcium, and essential nutrients for stronger bones and sustained energy. With its role expanding across daily routines and fitness habits, dairy continues to be a vital part of a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages in India.
