India’s First Single-Use Scale-Up Facility Launched at Genome Valley, Set to Create 500+ Biotech Jobs

India’s biotechnology landscape is accelerating into the future as Genome Valley unlocks faster access to life-saving biologics and next-generation therapeutics. Powered by Telangana’s forward-looking policies, top-tier scientific talent and a strong manufacturing base, this expansion is turning breakthrough research into real-world healthcare solutions more quickly and affordably than ever before.

With smart scale-up infrastructure and plug-and-play labs now available, innovators can move from idea to clinic with greater speed and confidence. Hyderabad is rapidly positioning its reputation as a global epicentre for biopharma, where cutting-edge treatments advance to patients faster, smarter, and at lower cost, ultimately benefiting millions in India and across the world.

This major transformation comes through the launch of the 1 Bio Biopharma Hub which strengthens India’s position in advanced Research and Development (R&D) led biotech innovation. The facility features state of the art single use bioprocess systems, bioreactors up to 500 litres, advanced upstream and downstream technologies, and a dedicated analytical suite that supports both Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) grade biomolecule development.

The hub includes 150,000 square feet of plug and play labs, configurable innovation suites, shared analytical spaces, and dedicated training labs that will nurture high-quality scientific talent. This world class bioprocess development center has been developed in collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific. On Monday, IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu inaugurated the facility, marking a new milestone in Genome Valley’s growth.

The inauguration also celebrated 25 years of Genome Valley as a leading global life sciences cluster. The Minister unveiled a new Genome Valley logo signifying the cluster’s evolution and a landmark gateway structure to reinforce its global identity. To support future expansion, Rs 200 crores worth of infrastructure upgrades including road widening, new greenfield roads, power and quality of life improvements were also announced.

The State has enabled investment of Rs 150 crores in core infrastructure under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model while Thermo Fisher has contributed Rs 90 crores towards the Bioprocess Design Centre and Customer Experience Centre. The Biopharma Hub is expected to attract over Rs 500 crores in private investment and create more than 500 high-quality jobs.

The Customer Experience Centre (CEC) will act as an advanced collaborative hub offering hands on training and co-development opportunities for targeted therapeutic areas including cell and gene therapy, messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), oncology, proteomics and analytical sciences. It demonstrates 50-plus integrated workflows across 20-plus applications and supports between 200 to 250 researchers and scientists annually. Together with the Bioprocess Design Centre, the centre enables rapid prototyping, process optimisation and scalable biologics and vaccine development within the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Sridhar Babu stated that as Genome Valley marks 25 years, the State is preparing the cluster for its next wave of global leadership by democratising access to scale up infrastructure and enabling innovators from India or anywhere in the world to progress faster and more predictably.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Kumar, ITE&C Special Chief Secretary, stated that Telangana leads with 40 percent of India’s pharma production and one third of global vaccine supply, and 1 Bio further strengthens India’s biologics capabilities. Shakthi M Nagappan, CEO, Telangana Life Sciences Foundation, highlighted that the facility fills the most critical missing link in India’s biologics pipeline.

Later on, Tony Acciarito, President Asia Pacific Middle East and Africa Thermo Fisher Scientific, emphasised support for India’s rapidly evolving life sciences ecosystem. Srinath Venkatesh, Managing Director India and South Asia Thermo Fisher Scientific, reiterated the company’s commitment to innovation, development and manufacturing in India.

By unlocking next generation scale-up potential, this launch positions Genome Valley as one of the world’s most competitive biopharma innovation clusters, supporting India’s rise as a global powerhouse in life sciences.
