Choppers Go Desi: Tata & Airbus Power Up India’s First H125 Helicopter Line

India’s aerospace game just levelled up. Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) have joined forces to establish the country’s first private-sector helicopter Final Assembly Line (FAL) at Vemagal, Karnataka. The spotlight is on the Airbus H125 – the world’s best-selling single-engine helicopter, which is now set to take flight as a ‘Made in India’ product.

Set to roll out in early 2027, the first ‘Made in India’ H125 will cater to both domestic needs and export markets across South Asia. This move is a game-changer for India’s ambition to scale its civil aviation, para-public services, and defence ecosystem.

The H125 is renowned for its versatility – excelling in high-altitude and extreme environments. Globally, it’s used for emergency medical services, law enforcement, disaster relief, tourism, firefighting, and passenger transport. It even holds the distinction of being the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest.

TASL will handle manufacturing, integration, testing, and final flight trials before customer delivery, making this plant a cornerstone for India’s growing aerospace ambitions. A military variant, the H125M, will also be developed at this facility, aimed at strengthening India’s armed forces –  particularly in tough terrains like the Himalayan frontiers.

Executives from both sides highlighted the long-term value of the partnership:

Jürgen Westermeier, President & MD, Airbus India & South Asia, said, “India is an ideal helicopter country. A ‘Made in India’ helicopter will help develop this market and position helicopters as an essential tool for nation-building.”

Meanwhile, Sukaran Singh, CEO & MD, TASL, added, “Tata Advanced Systems is proud to be the first private sector company in India to build helicopters. This will strengthen both civil and defence requirements and further reinforce the Tata-Airbus partnership.”

This is Airbus’ second assembly line in India, after the C295 military aircraft plant in Vadodara, Gujarat –  highlighting its $1.4 billion annual sourcing footprint from the country. Airbus’ ties with India go back over six decades, starting with its collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce the Chetak and Cheetah helicopters, which served the armed forces with distinction. The H125M is positioned as their natural successor.

With this project, India aims to create a dynamic aerospace ecosystem, boost Atmanirbhar Bharat, and position itself as a regional hub for rotorcraft manufacturing and exports.
