India’s digital payments journey has moved far beyond online shopping and utility bills. From buying groceries at neighbourhood stores to paying restaurant bills, ordering essentials through quick commerce platforms and making everyday purchases, smartphone users today can manage much of their spending with just a few taps. As UPI becomes a preferred mode of payment, digital transactions are becoming a routine part of daily life across the country.
BHIM Payments App, developed by NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), recorded this growing adoption on its platform, with monthly transaction volumes increasing from 79.64 million in June 2025 to 244 million in May 2026, highlighting the growing use of digital payments for everyday transactions across the country.
Telangana has emerged as a key market in this shift, with BHIM transaction volumes rising more than three times between June 2025 and May 2026. The data shows everyday spending driving usage, led by groceries at 23.9%, dining at 18.1% and quick commerce at 11.6%. Dairy and bakeries accounted for 3.2%, fuel stations 2.8%, e-commerce 2.2% and government services 2%. The trend highlights consistent use of digital payments for routine and low-value transactions across urban and semi-urban areas.
The platform’s growth has also been supported by a steady expansion of features aimed at simplifying payments and improving user convenience. UPI Circle allows users to authorise trusted contacts to make payments within a defined limit, while Family Mode helps manage shared household expenses. Split Expenses enables easy bill sharing, and Spends Analytics provides a clear view of monthly spending patterns. UPI Lite Auto Top-Up, RuPay Credit Card on UPI, forex booking, prepaid recharges and rewards further add to everyday usability, strengthening the app’s role in routine financial transactions.

The app supports more than 15 regional languages, including Telugu, and is designed to work even in low-connectivity environments. This has helped widen access across rural and semi-urban regions. Alongside this, reward-based usage and merchant integrations have added to regular adoption, keeping transaction activity steady across user groups.
Telangana reflects how digital payments have become part of everyday transactions, said Lalitha Nataraj, MD & CEO of NBSL, noting that categories such as groceries, food outlets and quick commerce are driving usage, showing a clear shift towards routine, cashless spending.
Covering everything from small purchases to household spending, BHIM has evolved into a wider digital payments platform with tools such as UPI Circle, Family Mode and Spends Analytics for shared financial management. UPI Lite, credit on UPI and rewards support everyday transactions, making digital payments simpler and more accessible across user segments.
