From Hyd to Mumbai Runways: ‘Baakul’ Marks Vaishali Agarwal’s Pan-India Couture Debut

In a time when fashion is constantly being redefined by social media, celebrity influence, and shifting consumer tastes, what really makes a design connect with people beyond just the moment? Designers are increasingly moving towards pieces that carry meaning, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary styles to reflect both heritage and modern life. This approach is helping fashion move beyond regional boundaries, with collections now being shaped for audiences across the country, creating a broader conversation around identity, culture and evolving style.

It was seen in this evolving fashion landscape, with actress Alaya F walking as the showstopper, bringing visibility to Hyderabad-based couture designer Vaishali Agarwal’s latest showcase, ‘Baakul’. The collection was unveiled at a recently concluded fashion week in Mumbai, marking her first presentation beyond Hyderabad and a significant step in her two-decade-long journey.

Despite its national debut, the collection stays closely rooted in Hyderabad’s textile and craft traditions. Elements like the Nandi and fish motifs are brought to life through techniques such as dhabka embroidery, gota appliqué, floral handwork and detailed dori jackets, keeping the traditional feel intact while presenting it in a more modern way that is easy to connect with.

At the same time, the collection brings in a modern touch with flowing silhouettes, metallic accents and layered textures, making it suitable for today’s brides and festive occasions across cities. The designs feel both traditional and contemporary, offering styles that can work for weddings as well as high-end celebrations.

Speaking about the collection, Vaishali Agarwal said, “Presenting ‘Baakul’ in Mumbai is an important step in reaching a wider audience, while still staying true to the design roots of Hyderabad.” She added that the collection reflects a balance between traditional craftsmanship and the needs of today’s Indian bride.

Adding to the showcase is Shivasa Fine Jewellery, which complements the collection with designs that blend tradition and modern style. The pieces include polkis, gemstones and diamonds, designed to be more than just jewellery, with a focus on creating items that can be passed down as future heirlooms.

Together, Baakul and Shivasa Fine Jewellery present a complete look for the modern Indian woman, combining craftsmanship, tradition and contemporary style in a way that feels both meaningful and relevant.
